Comments I do not recommend racing an 8K the weekend after a half marathon. I think my body was purely running on the 5 hour power I had in the morning, but I was optimistic about getting in the mix for a sub 26 showing. Sadly, my legs locked up about 5 K into the race and I just had nothing left. The race strung out from the beginning and I was about 30th place, coming through the mile in about 5 flat. I felt pretty good working with a few guys and was able to hit 3 miles in more or less 15:35 before making the turnaround. My calves were feeling like rocks by this point and I just had no spring left in the legs. I died pretty hard ro unding out with a few 5:20s, but was able to clip off about 10 guys. When I made the final turn with 200 to go I heard the dreaded call of the announcer...."Give it up for the first girl, making her way to the finish line." I looked back, not knowing a lady was tracking me. My legs suddenly re-discovered their spring and I was able to keep a good 10 sec buffer between me and complete embarrassment. Ladies should not be running 26 anything...
