Comments Got back home from Italy last night around 2 in the morning. I heard that the beat the heat 5k was coming up so I looked it up and that was all the convincing I needed to show up the next day for the race. didnt sleep much that night due to my confused internal clock but was feeling okay when I started warming up. i ran 30 mins easy to shake out my legs which were feeling slightly heavy but still fresh. My expectations coming in were to just have fun and see were Im at after only hiking for the last 2 weeks. went out in the first mile in 5:16 way back in twentieth place or so. I felt really comfortable as that should. I started moving up and picking up the pace considerably. the second mile is slightly up and more difficult. I passed 12 guys by the second mile. I hit 5:19 f or mile two but I have no doubt that the effort was much harder. latched onto a pack of 5 before the right hand turn. was feeling really good still so i decided to keep moving, worried that my dead legs would result in a weak kick. drop the five guys and closed in 5:09 for the final mile, rounding out a seventh place finish. I was pleased with the effort and this gives me a good starting point for the next training cycle. Bobby Mack won easily in 14:14, a new course record, with a few other studs in tow.
