Comments The usual running pilgrimage to NC to discover who is the Ultimate Runner in the eyes of Sandy. I cruised through this one after training drops and surgery recovery. I was nursing a tight calf which occurred in my first couple weeks back of mileage. Didn't know what to expect since competition ranges year to year and I haven't done any speed work beyond 5K effort since early April. It became clear early on that Tyle was in monster shape and Joe was gunning for me. Luckily the heat wasn't an issue at all this year so the events went on smoothly without an extended break which is necessary to break the minds of all the high school speedsters. Old man strength must prevail. I really held off on the mile, content to hit 5k effort throughout. Nobody really wanted to run quick but Tyle and Joe so I figured I could save effort and maintain place comfortably. I had no interest in racing the 400 since my calf was tightening up a bit. I got off the gun quick and proceeded to step on the brakes so others would have to go around. 61 felt more comfortable than I expected. Im sure I could dip under 60 at the moment if needed. Joe tried to slip passed me on the outside. That cant happen in a short sprint race. Felt decent through the 800 but again stayed conservative. In reality I should have hit this one hard since my calf was loosening up considerably. Precautionary sandbagging was prevalent today. I knew if I had any chance of reducing my point total Id have to do it in the 100. managed a low 13, but depressed since 10 out of my 12 Ultimates were all under 13. Marathons make you slow. Cramped up in the 5k but held onto 4th at 6 minute mile pace. Tyle caught me on the straight away as I was entering 500 to go. I deeply regret not kicking, but part of me was worried about 5th place chasing me in the last 400. Maybe next time. 6th overall which matches my placing from last year. Was hoping for top 5 but after the set backs Im just happy it wasnt too embarrassing. Ill have to come back next year when the track is resurfaced, Im sure theres some speed left in the tank, not too old yet.
